In recent weeks, Kansas City's shelters have experienced an influx of animals. Sadly, this is common during the spring and summer months. However, here at SNKC, we know the most effective way to keep pets out of shelters is to address the issue head-on through compassion and connecting with pet owners most in need of assistance.
We are partnering with Wayside Waifs and KC Animal Control to provide support to the neighborhoods seeing the largest numbers of animal control calls. Representatives from Wayside, Animal Control, and SNKC (that's you!) will work in teams to canvass these neighborhoods, distributing handouts with information on our services and basic pet care, and providing pet supplies when we see someone in need.
Event details:
- We'll meet at SNKC by 8:30 am, then split into teams and head out to the target neighborhoods. Experienced staff and volunteers will be present.
- Handouts will be placed in fences or doors, so you will not be expected to know/discuss details of our services.
- A picnic lunch of pizza and drinks will be provided at SNKC.
Volunteers need to be able to be outdoors in potentially hot weather, and must be able to walk fair distances. Volunteers must have reliable transportation and may be asked to carpool to their team's location.
The information you'll provide will have a direct impact on pets in the neighborhood. Owners who are informed about how to access services, and that know more about what their pets need to stay healthy and safe, are far less likely to be cited by animal control, and are far less likely to relinquish their pets to a shelter. This is true boots-on-the-ground support for families that may be struggling, and reaches the pets that are most at risk of being surrendered to a shelter!
